Landing in Bangkok coming back from Korea, I felt exhausted and a little hesitant to fly onto Phuket. My friend was getting married though and I knew I had to push through. Little did I know that my next destination was a close to paradise as I have ever come to. When someone says Phuket, my immediate reaction is “Ugh, tourists, and overpriced everything” (said in a very whiny voice) But if done right, Phuket can be a great escape, whether for just a couple days or an extended time. It will cost more than you are used to if you are situated or have traveled in the North or Central parts of Thailand, but it doesn’t have to break your piggy bank. Here are some things I picked up from my two day glimpse into Phuket.
Where To Lay Your Head
First instinct is to find a sweet bungalow or resort right on the beach. This is great except you will be bankrupt. I suggest looking for a smaller family owned establishment a short walk away. There are no shortage of these types of hostels/guesthouses. Some can be real dives while others are gems. One such gem, The Pineapple Guesthouse and Cafe, in Karon, will be my go-to for sure. It isn’t a five-star resort, but in my book it is way better. The Pineapple is run by a welcoming Thai/Farang family. Husband, wife, and children can speak both English and Thai, while the staff can hold their own in basic English communication. There are dorm rooms and private rooms available, about 20 in all. Amenities include Aircon, WIFI, TV, mini-fridge, safety deposit box, free advice, motorbikes for rent, and also the use of beach equipment. Laundry service is available at a great price. And there is a cute book exchange if you want to grab something to read while you chill at the beach. The first floor has a nice little cafe area to hangout in, and the owners are always available for a friendly chat. And the best part, it is a short walk from the beach!

The Sights
Phuket has beautiful view after view, and plenty of beaches, each with their own personality. Here are just a few of the sights that I got to visit on my morning off.
Chalong Pier
Laem Phrom Thep Viewpoint
Yu Nui Beach
Rawai Beach
Kata Noi Beach
Karon Beach
Renting a motorbike and just taking off is one of my favorite ways to travel. After a few suggestions from the Pineapple, I hopped on a motorbike and just followed the signs to any beach/viewpoint. You can plan out a course of travel and look for those hard to find/secret beaches if you have the time, or you can just ask a local where to go. The beaches are all connected by the most breathtaking roads through the cliff-side hills and harbors. If you are inexperienced on motorbike this might be a little scary for you. You can do it though! Just take your time and hug the shoulder to allow the crazy fast van drivers pass you. If you are familiar with the motorbike then this will be an enjoyable ride with exhilarating views. If you have the time there are so many places to see and rich cultures to interact with. I definitely recommend making a trip down to Phuket and even the outlying Islands that are reachable through it.
